I'm a 5am person, but this isn't a 5am guide, the briefing works whether your morning starts with a sunrise workout or with a six-year-old's elbow in your ribs. The idea is simple: the first ten decisions of your day are the same ten decisions every day. What matters today, what can wait, what am I forgetting, when will I move my body, what's for dinner. Batch them into one two-minute read.
The briefing prompt
Save this somewhere you can paste from, notes app, text-yourself, wherever. Fill the brackets the night before or with your coffee:
The word cap is essential. A briefing you can read in two minutes gets read; a page of AI enthusiasm gets skipped by Thursday.
Why each piece is there
- Top 3, in order. Not ten. The list of ten is how everything becomes equally urgent and nothing gets done well.
- The forgetting question. This is the line that earns its keep, it catches the permission slip, the renewal, the birthday. AI is weirdly good at spotting the gap between your calendar and your obligations.
- Where the day breathes. Movement doesn't happen when it isn't scheduled, see it placed against your real day, not your aspirational one. Energy is infrastructure.
- Task vs. noise. Half the morning swirl isn't actionable, it's just anxiety wearing a to-do's clothing. Having something sort them is strangely calming: three of the five things on your mind become "noise, let it go."
Upgrading it over time
Keep the briefing in one ongoing chat and it starts compounding. Add Sunday context once: "This week the big rocks are X and Y, dinner plan is on the fridge, partner travels Thursday." Now weekday briefings inherit the week's shape. End Friday with "what kept slipping this week?", the answer is your calendar telling you the truth about your priorities.
The honest caveat
The briefing doesn't create discipline; it spends less of it. You still choose whether to do the Top 3. But the twenty minutes of morning fog where you re-derive your own life every day, that part is gone, and it doesn't come back. That's the trade: two minutes of reading for twenty of reconstructing.
The routine isn't the achievement. The routine is the container. What you pour into the space it creates, that's the achievement.
